Top Ten Unusual Guitars

When it comes to owning a musical instrument there are diverse styles for different instruments. Guitars may be one instrument that has more unusual types than most others.  This is in part because of their great popularity.  But it is also because of the imagination of musicians and designers together. Not all of the unusual guitars that you will see are even playable, but they are certainly there to make a statement of individuality.

One of the most famous and most used unusual types of these is the cigar box guitar. You may say that these do not count as real guitars; after all they are made of things you find around the house. But, the truth is that these guitars, which have roots that can be traced backed to the days of sharecroppers children making them, are some of the best early instruments that have been made. Some early famous musicians are well known for having begun on a cigar box guitar. They are easy to make, by children or adults, can have one or many strings and more times than you would expect they can actually make some good sound.

Another unusual guitar is the harp-guitar. These are instruments that are a combination of a guitar and harp in one. There are hundreds of different models of this guitar that can have different numbers of strings and arrangements. It originated in Britain in the last 1700s initially meant to be no more than a parlor instrument. This evolved into its modern form over the next two hundred years. The harp usually has thirty-one strings and comes up in a right from the six-string guitar. These are beautiful instruments.

The smallest guitar is a mere ten microns long and given that a micron is one millionth of a meter, this is incredibly small. This tiny instrument cannot be played by the human hand but can be by a computer-based method. But it does not matter since the human ear cannot hear the sound it makes.

Some guitars are not made to be played, but are made to show what can be done with them. One that would fit into this category is the guitar made with three necks. The first has twelve strings, the second is a regular six sting and the last is fretless.  This guitar is supposed to be a one of a kind machine that has been featured throughout the United States on magazines and television appearances. The same person also made a heart shaped guitar with three necks.

How about the guitar that is fashioned to be both a guitar and base at the same time? This instrument was originated for those who wanted to be able to play both without switching instruments or who really did not like their bassist and wanted to change the formation of their group. To play it, you need to have really long fingers.

This first group is the more commonly known of the unusual guitars, but there are so many more that have been made into odd shapes. There is the gun guitar. Seen in Japan this model has the body made from a reconditioned M-16. In some other countries they use AK-47s.In 1984 a special guitar was designed for a jazz player. It has forty-two stings on one normal sized neck and two small necks. There are also guitars made in strange shapes like the toilet seat guitar, and the Flipout guitar, which has the body turned around the other way and the naked lady guitar. That one needs no explanation.
